Maasai Mara Game Reserve

amed as the 7the 7th wonder of the world in 2006, Maasai Mara is East Africa’s most famous game reserves. Covering 1,500sq kms, the Mara consists of undulating hills, swampy locations, edaphic and great rolling grasslands that sustain some of the most varied wildlife in Africa, if not the world. The varied and spotted nature of vegetation is what gives it the name “Mara” derived from the Maasai word. Maasai Mara plays host to one of the world’s most spectacular wildebeest’s migration on earth. This concentration is at its greatest from around July to the end of October, when the migrating herds filter across the Mara River from North western Serengeti. During this period, the vast plains are filled, as far as the eye can see, with wildebeest, plains zebra, Thomson’s gazelle, eland, Topi and hartebeest as well as the normal resident herds such as elephant, buffalo and giraffe. Naturally, these are all followed by great prides of lion, hyena, cheetah and the various other predators and scavengers.  The cycle of wildebeest’s migration do bring a balance to this fragile ecosystem, made up of the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara. They are the heart and soul of the Great Migration — the key to survival on the vast plains.
